“tooth”という単語はもちろん、皆さんご存じの「歯」を意味し、“teeth”はその複数形ですね。マラソンの選手の中には、大会準備に向けて最初にすることと言えば、歯医者さんで、歯を診てもらうという人もいるほど、「歯」は身体の健康を左右しうるほど大切です。
　 だからでしょうか、“tooth” には文字通りの意味の他に、 「力、実効力,威力」というもあります。　また　単数形で「好み、趣味」などを表し、いろいろな場面で使われます。


Sink your teeth into"teeth"
  1. have teeth     （効力がある）
    This new fitness program has teeth.
    この新しいフィットネスプトグラムは効力がある。
  2. cut one’s teeth on~     （現在に至るまでに、以前に～を学ぶ）
    She cut her teeth on English before tackling Chinese.
    中国語に取り組む前に英語を学んだ。
  3. sink one’s teeth into~     （～に夢中になる）
    In order to lose weight, she sank her teeth into Billy’s Boot Camp.
    体重を減らすために、ビリーのブートキャンプに夢中だ。
  4. grit one's teeth     （苦難に耐える）
    We can’t change the situation now, so we just have to grit our teeth.
    今は何も出来ないから、耐えるしかない。
  5. in the teeth of~     （～にもかかわらず）
    The mall was built in the teeth of opposition from local people.
    そのショッピングセンターは地域の住民の反対にもかかわらず建てられた。
  6. kick ~ in the teeth     （～にひどい仕打ちをする）
    He needed help badly, but she kicked him in the teeth.
    彼は、助けがとても必要だったのに、彼女はひどい仕打ちをした。
  7. lie through one's teeth     （ぬけぬけと嘘をつく）
    He always lies through his teeth, so we cannot trust him.
    彼は、いつもぬけぬけと嘘をつくから、信用できない。
  8. like pulling teeth     （極めて難しい）
    Getting him to speak English is like pulling teeth.
    彼に英語を話してもらうのは、とても難しい。
  9. show (bare) one's teeth     （不満をぶちまける）
    In response to the numerous scandals, the electorate showed its teeth at the polls by voting in the opposition camp.
    数々のスキャンダルに対応して、有権者は野党陣営に投票することで、選挙で不満をぶちまけた。
  10. a tooth     （食物の好み、趣味）
    She has a sweet tooth.
    彼女は甘いものに目がない。
    She has a great tooth for strawberries.
    イチゴが大好物だ。
