The long awaited silver screen version of Dan Brown’s best selling book, The Da Vinci Code, has finally been released to theaters this summer. With many disappointing movie releases this year, audiences have turned to director Ron Howard for an epic rendition of this thrilling, fast pasted novel. Although the movie is somewhat different from Dan Brown’s version, The Da Vinci Code is a fast paced mystery through the streets of Western Europe.
The main character, Robert Langdon, played by Tom Hanks, finds himself caught up in a two thousand year old mystery of symbols and codes. With help from Sofie Neveu, played by Audrey Tautou, he must elude the French Police and the persistence of the Opus Dei, a dark and murderous secret cult who will stop at nothing to posses this controversial secret about ancient Christianity.
Having read the book, I really enjoyed seeing this story unfold in the theater. The plot, however, seemed to stop and go too much and I couldn’t help but feel the movie was giving a lot of information in a short period of time. Especially for an audience who is unfamiliar with Christianity. For them, I would recommend watching The Da Vinci Code on DVD at home with someone who understands the religion. This way, you can pause the movie and ask questions as you watch. However you watch it , The Da Vinci Code will raise a lot of questions about what you know and what you think you know about western religion. Enjoy!
