English

Many students often ask me about ways to improve their English skills in and out of class; they have signed up for classes, got their text and attend regularly, preparing and reviewing as they should, but feel they would like to progress a little faster. After many times answering this topic in class, and observing many students over the years, I like to write a few tips to help you all take greater strides in your studies. Some of this overlaps with what Kaz has written in the past, but good advice is always worth repeating.

Believe in yourself and your abilities

Never say “I can’t speak English.” Never believe “I won’t be able to speak English perfectly.” Believe “My English will continue to improve,” and “I will speak English to the best of my abilities.” Study at your own pace.

Don’t let the progress of other students deter you or intimidate you, use their success as a stimulus to achieving your own goals. Share their success, share their techniques for achieving their success. And please share their happiness in their success. Share your successes too, never use your language development as a weapon to intimidate others or belittle their progress.

Frustration is a sure sign you are on the verge of learning something worthwhile, and mistakes are a good sign you are trying and experimenting. Never be put off by either, and believe you will be able to look back on them as signposts of your progress.

Any chance to use English is a good chance

The old adage “If you don’t use it you’ll lose it” is true. Language doesn’t exist without a context in which to communicate it, and we use four modes to achieve that communication: writing, reading, listening and speaking. Take every chance to use English, at whatever level you can use it, in those modes.

Get pen friends, or email friends, or write in English to us here at the school, keep a diary or your daily scheduler in English.

Read books, kids’ books are a good place to start, subscribe to a newspaper, read the news on the Internet, and keep a notebook and dictionary close by.

Buy or borrow language tapes, tape the NHK English programs and listen to them over and over, listen to bilingual news broadcasts on TV, actively watch English language movies of all types.

Speaking is the hard one to cover. You may not have daily contact with native speakers, but maximize your time in English class. Force yourself to speak only English, learn to say ‘um’ instead of ‘えっと,’ communicate with classmates only in English, in class and out. Form a circle to enjoy coffee together, play tennis or share a musical instrument, but only use English together. Call classmates on the phone, and speak English together. If none of those are available, talk to yourself! The goal is to communicate your ideas and feelings, and if you can achieve that, if you can fight your natural tendencies to speak so easily in Japanese, you will have gained more than any text book alone could have given you.

Don’t believe all the media shows you, use it!

NHK provides wonderful resources for the English language learner, yet the commercial stations seem to make efforts to undo all the good such programs inspire. Many programs show interviews on the street of random passersby testing their English skills, or comedians put in situations where their English skills are put to the test, and they inevitably fail, or ham up their mistakes for comic effect. A silly mistake is derided, mistakes are repeated to elicit more laughs. Street interviews with the specific goal of finding poor English usage, I’m sure, ignore those passersby who actually can speak English. Producers edit programs with only humor in mind. The invariable results of such programming only serves to reinforce that Japanese people cannot, and never will be able to speak English. DON’T BELIEVE THOSE PROGRAMS! Sure, have a laugh with them, but you try to correct in your mind what mistakes have been made, then turn to NHK for a free English lesson.

Every one of us is born with an innate ability to learn language, and as a species we have the drive to socialize and utilize those abilities. Every one of you has already mastered a language without opening a text book, the entire framework for the language you speak implanted as you sat at the dinner table with your family and played with friends in the park as you ‘learned’ Japanese. It is true that those innate abilities employed in learning a second language diminish with time. But the pay-off is as we mature we learn how to manage time better, we learn new techniques for learning, we create broader social circles and broader ranges of interest to employ our skills and we learn what works for us in different situations. While children are wonderful ‘natural’ learning beings, adults are potentially far more efficient learners.

In part two I’d like to continue with some of my ideas on the need for goals and the national need Japan has to speak to the world in a language it can share.
