ais041au2006brngtwntwersSeptember, ’06 marked the 5th anniversary of the horrendous terrorist attacks in New York and Washington resulting in the deaths of almost 3,000 people. Now the world is once again united in the condemnation of terrorism. The Bush Administration, based on inaccurate intelligence of Saddam Hussein being in possession of weapons of mass destruction, invaded Iraq with coalition forces and succeeded in toppling Hussein. As we all know, what initially appeared to be an easy victory for the U.S. has dragged on for 5 years and caused irreparable damage to the people of Iraq as well as the coalition forces involved, and the death toll is still rising. According to one survey, as of September, 2006, the US led war is responsible for the deaths of approximately 2,700 Americans and the shocking number of over 250,000 Iraq civilians. The Bush Administration’s campaign to democratize Iraq has met with a full-scale insurgency against the occupying military forces and has escalated into sectarian violence. Was the invasion of Iraq inevitable in response to 9/11? Is the world safer 5 years after 9.11? No. The Iraq war has only polarized the world and triggered many Islamic fundamentalists to turn against the US and its allies, and to orchestrate heinous terrorist attacks throughout the world, taking a toll of many innocent lives.

We, as learners of English, must continue to develop our communication skills to be able to voice our opinions, and raise our awareness of the world by using English as the best tool to broaden our horizons and understanding.

On the night of September 11, 2001, I was glued to the T.V. screen, not able to comprehend what was going on, and I still remember that feeling of horror that made my stomach churn. How I wished what was happening before my eyes was some scene from a movie. Now 5 years later, the international community should refresh this image deep in our mind and remember the pain inflicted on the victims of both 9/11 and the Iraq war.

Throughout history, so many conflicts and wars have taken place because of our inability to see other people’s point of view. We, as learners of English, must continue to develop our communication skills to be able to voice our opinions, and raise our awareness of the world by using English as the best tool to broaden our horizons and understanding. When people in different nations learn to communicate better through one common voice, the world will be a better place where people of different nationalities, races and creeds can live side by side. Now is the time that we pledge never to resort to wars and work together to tackle international problems as citizens of the world.
